Chikungunya virus is a member of the genus Alphavirus, an insect – borne virus that is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. CHIKV infection can cause an acute debilitating illness, most often characterized by fever, severe joint pain and rash , and also cause an illness with symptoms very similar to dengue fever . Chikungunya is rarely life threatening. Widespread occurrence of diseases causes substantial morbidity and economic loss.
